Well, what does the HALLAM name mean? Firstly we will explain a little about surnames.
1. Patronymic Surnames - names derived from a father's name. i.e: WilSon - son of William
2. Place Names - Geographical designation, creating a class of local surnames derived from the place of residence. i.e: NORMAN was from Normandy; BROOKS lived along a brook.
3. Descriptive Names (Nicknames) - Those derived from a physical or other characteristic of the bearer, These descriptive names are thought to have originally evolved as nicknames during the Middle Ages when a man, familiar with everyone in his small village, might jokingly create nicknames for his neighbors and friends based on personality or physical appearance. i.e: Michael the strong became Michael STRONG and black-haired Peter became Peter BLACK.
Well, what does the HALLAM name mean?
The Hallam name derives from the second section - Place names:
HALLAM - English - Pronounced: HAL-am
Which comes from a surname which was derived from a place name meaning either
"at the rocks" or "at the nook"
or "dweller at the rocks" in Old English.
The origin of the HALLAM name is very hard to ascertain. Numerous people have investigated the origin, of which I am indebted to (Robert Hallam & Desmond Holden).
There is a school of thought that there may be two origins, one from the villages on the outskirts of Ilkeston in Derbyshire and the other from the Yorkshire Sheffield area. There is a possible third - HALAM, northeast of Nottingham, though this is remote.
